Sounds like a viral infection to me. If I were there, I could give you a more in-depth analysis, but until then, that's the best i can do. Damned annoying when it happens, though.

I slowly walked back to the last place I felt safe, the village. I was in for a shock. When I arrived, I saw the whole town had been gutted; every child, man, and woman had been murdered. The town had become a real ghost town. I walked in a state of shock back to my old place of residence. All the time, unearthly sounds could be heard coming from the Crypt. All around me was carnage. Bodies were lying ripped to shreds all over the place. The stream that ran through our village was stained red with the blood of the slain. I remember thinking “they’ve killed them all, I’m the only one left alive” to myself over and over. I walked into my house, and up into my room. I automatically packed two of my bags with essentials, and walked out of the house. I also grabbed the sword that had been left to my father as part of his inheritance as protection, and preceded into the dark night.
