It is shame to lose Angus for Have I Got News for You. BBC should bring him back.

I have to say that I would be completely satisfied if some executive at the BBC were to lose their job over the sacking of Angus Deayton. I fail to see why it is that the BBC has chosen to act at such a late date and in doing so has said farewell to probably the best host of a BBC programme.
Angus Deayton, Ian Hislop and Paul Merton are a team on Have I Got News For You. Paul Merton’s facetiousness bounces off of both Ian and Angus and Ian’s witty humour is again partly due to the success of Angus as a presenter.
Again I have to point out that I fail to see why it is that the BBC has chosen to act at such a late date on the whole Angus Deayton issue. Surely being one of the worlds largest news broadcasters the BBC themselves would know that the Deayton affair is ‘old news’ and as such only the topic of jokes presented by none other than Paul Merton and Ian Hislop. And yet, these jokes are funny. Indeed, as is the whole show. Well, I say is… when really I mean was. And ‘was’ being the operative word. Now that Angus has been sacked I have to agree with my fellow complainants that the show is simply not the same. Ian and Paul are still funny to an extent, although Ian not as funny and Paul simply cannot pull off the whole host thing. If you ask me, someone who displays obvious intelligence by way of speech, tone and mannerisms should complete the hosting of such a show. The host would appear well dressed and up to date on current affairs – as if a newsreader and yet on a spoof news broadcast. Indeed the presenter should have some form of panache and flamboyance…Angus Deayton.
And now it appears that the BBC has completely ruined a completely brilliant show and I cannot see the show now becoming a success and I would not be surprised to see ratings drop over the next few weeks.

The poor man has sufferd enough. If the Beeb still expect the long running show to continue as well as it as done I expect they will be sadly mistaken.
Can we start a petition to get him re-insteated?

Phil_L875 Posted Nov 3, 2002
I suppose we could, although I don't know if the BBC would take any notige though.

I think that it is a terrible shame that the BBC have sacked Deayton over what appears to amount to nothing more significant than trash journalism. The newspaper proprietors admit that they print this kind of rubbish because it is entertaining to their retarded readers. But it is not news. It is not significant or important and the BBC should have shown some perspective and disregarded it for the the rubbish it is. This whole thing has something of the Witch Hunt about it - How convenient that the latest story broke just after the start of the new series.

I have to agree, the show is simply not the same without Angus, the humour just does not flow any more.
Paul Merton and Ian Hislop are brilliant in their usual places, with Angus there to bounce the jokes backwards and forwards, but no-one could compere the show with Angus's ease and expertise.
In fact without Angus Deayton the show is a mere shadow of its former self, and until he is reinstated we will not be watching again, thank you all the same.

HIGNFY wasn't the same w/out Angus and his wry/cryptic humour. Merton used to tease Angus about cue-reading, but I'm afraid he wasn't able to do justice to it - not as much as Angus did, anyway. My whole family misses angus - bring him back!!!
Angus Deayton
Researcher 208215 Posted Nov 4, 2002
Yep - agree with you totally. Angus handled all those personal jibes so well, my family & I will probably stop watching this show. Merton can't replace good ol' Angus, tho' looks like Ross Noble can do one better than Merton himself!!

I feel I have to agree with the last few comments, I watched Have I got news for you at the weekend and being a great fan of the show for many years felt It just is not that funny with out Angus Deaton, in fact it was quite boring. Someone at the BBC has made a grave error of judgement in sacking Angus Deaton, I feel that if Angus Deaton is not brought back in to the show it will die a slow death which is a shame as it was one of the best programes on the BBC. I for one will not be watching any more.

Not even to find out how it is with the new presenter (when they get one)
Paul Merton shoudl definatly stick tobeing a panalist. He made me laugh once, maybe even twice last episode presenting it. When hes a panelist he is the funnyist man there.

Me and my dad both being long time watchers of HIGNFY wern't very impressed with Paul as Presenter no offence to him or his comical style he is a very funny person but just in the right situation.
I don't think Ian could have doen a better job either, I think its a job which has to be done by a person with a cirtain amount of class. Dispite recent news in media about Angus you see him as a person with class it's as if that job was made for him. I think the idea of a petition to re-instate him would be a good idea and i would cirtainly sign it.

What a shame the beeb found it necessary to sack Angus. I thought he was handling the whole thing really well. I just can't believe Ian and Paul don't want to continue working with him - if that's true then they are being very hypocritical.BRING BACK ANGUS.

A big big mistake sacking Angus Deayton, last fridays edition was not very good. Paul is a brilliant captain, but not a good host.
Sandi Toksvig would be a brilliant replacement.

Angus Deayton was perfect for the role that he had on Have I got News for you. Personally I really don't care about his private life, he didn't break any laws and it really only affects his partner. I thought that Paul and Ian were snide on the last show he presented, and very unforgiving. Paul was useless as the main presenter and is so good normally as one of the team leaders. I would like Paul and Ian to get over their issues and be more professional and I would really like to see Angus back presenting the show. What giant girls blouse sacked him? It's a pity that they so pious and not as reasonable as the viewers they think they represent.

Yuk, she would not be a good replacement. Just put Angus Deayton back

I agree with just about all the others about bringing Angus back. If Ann Robinson is put on the show more than this once I will never watch it again. She really is the worst presenter I have ever come across and I can't understand why she is given any space.
Angus Deayton
Researcher 208644 Posted Nov 8, 2002
Ann Robinson are the BBC insane??
what a great way to kill the show.
she is one of the most unpopular presenters on TV, hated by many for her arrogance and ignorant way she speaks to people.
I could not think of a person more unsuited to the job of presenting the show? they may as well use Jeremy Beadle, no one liked him that much ether.
This is a huge mistake by the bbc and it will kill one of the few (quiz shows?) programs on BBC2 worth watching.
