What would be a useful addon would be some sort of java applet that sits either on your
user page, or in it's own window, that would inform you of any new replies (like the full
listing of posts, but only show threads that have replies, and have it auto-updating
every couple of minutes or so)

Wait at least a couple of days after they introduced the reply details on 'my home' pages (thanks Jim!), before you start complaining

Yes, this would be nice - a kind of 'push' h2g2. Then we can throw away all those stupid email clients, and ICQ, and IRC etc.etc.
One day...
First I've got to streamline these forums. 75% of scripts running are to handle the forums. I hate frames. Would anyone object if I rewrote the whole lot in javascript and DHTML?

Would there be scope for user preferences to change the layout - such as font size,
since on this 1600x1200 display I have to squint a bit to see the text!
Also (as I have said elsewhere) I think that 5 lines in the edit boxes is a bit cramped.
Kppe up the good work!

User preferences are definitely on the list. You're fortunate to have such a large screen mode - you should see what the forums look like in 800x600 (not to mention 640x480).

well, you can't view the forums at all using a text terminal using lynx!
(The entries display ok, although the buttons have no alt= text, so navigation is tricky)

just as long as it doesn't make the site totally unusable on a non-javascript browser,
I don't think there'll be any problems

Not only would I not object to a total rewrite, I'd welcome it. Frames are a royal pain. Please nuke them on this site.

I hate frames. I'm also annoyed that when I preview my post, the screen defaults to something rather bigger than 800x600, meaning I can't view the lot at once and have to scroll back and forth (horizontally). However, I appreciate that there are bound to be some difficulties experienced by some people and I am not demanding that anybody do anything expressly for my benefit. I have no objection to Java other than how it crashes me really really badly... *sob*

I have similar problems with java:
I keep playing with yahoo's chatrooms and pager (see my journal entry on the h2g2 yahoo club) but they seem to make netscape even more unstable than it is normally!
