Clicking on < thepost > smiley currently links to the <./>Smileys</.> page. Wouldn't it be much better if it linked to <./>ThePost</.> itself?

You've forgotten the most obvious one. should link to the help page.
But I think this should just be the one exception.

I think it's a nice idea, but the important thing is that we're consistent, so we'll keep the link to the smileys page itself.
That way, people who are new to the site can discover what the smileys are and how they can get them - and we do have a link to The Post on the relevant section of the smileys page. It's an interesting idea though.
