Azara and the F-r-i-c-k Collection

Zarquon's Singing Fish!

Not sure if you're aware of this thread: F69837?thread=2826348&latest=1, but it seems Azara has unwittingly run into censorship when reporting on the F-r-i-c-k Collection. I'm wondering why the word f-r-i-c-k was included in the first instance.

Yes, that does seem to be casting the net a little widely.

And for your information there are 6 entries in the Edited Guide which make mention of various Fricks - baseball, Doctor Who, Saturn V rockets, and the Pennsylvania turnpike - which if they require further editing will not be do-able by the Curators, as they'll run in to this filter.

So the plural works.

I just ran into the filter when trying to use the present participle of the word in question as an adjective.

It seems almost cowardly to block euphemisms as well, somehow.

since we haven't had any answer yet, I'm going ahead with writing an entry on the F-r-i-c-k Collection. It would be nice to get some feedback before it hits Peer Review...smiley - biggrin

Good stuff, go ahead smiley - smiley

As for things that fail the filter but shouldn't do, make reference to it in the entry and the Scouts will flag it up when making the recommendation.

It seems that there is permission to include words that would otherwise fail if, I presume, they are seen as editorially justified. Just take a look at what's included in the definition of the word "naff" in the Polari entry (A10357832) that was on the front page yesterday.

Good for you, Azara.smiley - ok

Maybe you can call it the Fri-ck collection something of that ilk until you can get the spelling past the profanity filter.

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

Since the Editors are immune to the filter we should still be able to write about whatever we could before. When we come to a problem like this we can just find something that works (like Fríck or Frock or F<Editors, please insert 'rick' here&gtsmiley - winkeye, use it in the entry and allow it to go through the editing process until it reaches the Eds, at which time the word should be inserted.

So go right ahead Azara smiley - smiley

There's a remake of 70's SF show 'Battlestar Galactica' on Sky TV (and some US network, too) at the moment which is taking great pleasure in overusing the term 'frack', which was used in the original 70's series as a generic censor-safe made-up swear word.

In the original, our heroes used to shout 'Frack!', when they hit their thumbs with a hyperspanner.

In the new one, people say things like:

"Why don't you go frack yourself."

or

"Frack! Frack you, you motherfracking frackers! Frack!"

10 minutes of this, and you don't even notice that the swearing is made up.
