This week's title is Days of Miracles and Wonders. Clockwise from upper left: The flying librarian of Ephesus, TJ the orange kitty taking a nap, a house sparrow in a bare bush, the interior of St Peter's in Rome, a view of the Roman hills, ice-covered trees in the Austrian woods, seabirds flying over the water in New Brighton, UK, a seagull in the foreground of a terraced landscape in the Roman countryside, more seabirds on the shore, a statue pair in St Peter's, a cloud-streaked blue sky, and a twig delicatedly embellished with frost.

There is so much going on in this issue, you just wouldn't believe. First of all, the winter continues, as is its wont this time of year, and we have photographic proof of nature's artistry. Fog can be pretty. So can ice and frost. Take a look. TJ the cat doesn't care: it can do all of that without him. He's just glad that we got the furnace fixed. It went out at -13°C. From what we hear, that's been a common occurrence on more than one continent, so we're glad to report that the cold snap has been easing up. Enjoy the pictures, though.

Birds are pointing out spots of interest this week. Who knew seagulls made such good tour guides? Please appreciate New Brighton, Ephesus, and Rome. The birds and the photographers insist. There is also a flying librarian (thanks, Galaxy Babe).

There is infotainment in one section. That's because I tend to write educational and/or outré Stuff for the social media people in response to their arty 'prompts'. This week, you can learn about labyrinths and fools, and read stories about spies and oddly literary dreams. Don't like it? Then send me more Stuff. Otherwise you get me in storytelling mode.

Awix has cinema. And such cinema! He watches movies so you don't have to. Although this time you might. Who could resist a three-and-a-half-hour-long film about. . . well, that would be telling. Trust me, the review alone is entertaining.

We also have humour. And ongoing feuds about humour. Not content with making me write a whole guide entry in response to one of his jokes, Bluebottle is now determined to insult every nation on Earth. This week, besides taking a swipe at the US as usual, he's trying to outrage the Swiss. Tavaron and I spent a productive half-hour thinking up more appropriate things to call the Swiss. Anyway, you won't want to miss the ongoing feast of weirdness and obscure witticisms.

Whatever we are, we are not 'trendy'. Nor are we dull. We don't write feel-good, although we'd like to cheer the planet up. Like the Spanish Inquisition (or Bluebottle with his red pencil), nobody ever quite expects us. This might be our secret weapon going forward.

Stay warm and dry, friends. If you see something, take its picture. And have the best week possible in this mad world.

Quote of the Week:
The map could be guaranteed to confuse anyone accustomed to depend on the orthodox publications of the National Survey rather than on early seventeenth-century charts. The wavy lines presumably represented the sea. Dalgliesh felt the omission of a spouting whale.
