Seventh Son Superstition
Pimms Posted Mar 21, 2003
Sorry I missed this in the peer process - the only experience I have had with cauls is the use of one as a pivotal device in Orson Scott Card's series The Tales of Alvin Maker.
The premise here was that the caul (of a seventh son of a seventh son) could be used (by someone with the ability to see people's innermost thoughts) to avert tragedy caused, however indirectly, by water (the tool of the Unmaker).
I hadn't realised the superstitious basis this had.
