If you're interested in using this for the Edited Guide, and if there's any possibility of a photo to accompany it, please contact me and we'll work out some ideas. I could get a picture of old stone prison walls, or the plaque marking the site where the first Republican Party convention was held, shot of the cityscape, something like that.
Thanks,
Deidzoeb

Interesting and comprehensive article. That people think the use of prison labour for commercial purposes is a good idea has always baffled me as well.
Unfortunately, the rules don't normally allow a photo. One in 5 entries get a picture from the Community artists (editor's choice) which could sometimes be a photo. Otherwise the best way is to link to sites with photos on, as indeed you have done.

Well, if there are any Community Artists interested, please email me so we can conspire for you to take a photo and me to remember nothing at all about that particular day if anyone asks.
The entry can survive without a photo, but I doubt any of the Community Artists live within a convenient distance from Jackson.

Has anyone read this? Pretty please? I put a few weeks of research and hard work into it.
I know it's boring to read about yet another smallish town that most researchers won't get a chance to visit, but the entry's really not bad IMHO. Did I mention it has Ted Nugent in there?
[Yes, I'm only posting to make this conversation jump higher on the PR page. Sorry.]

Considering that I've never heard of Jackson, I'm amazed at the amount of history which took place there...
Nice entry Subcom!

Thanks. I dug up a book about the history of Jackson, and scoured some websites trying to figure out when the old prison closed and whether the new prison is still the largest walled prison in the world. (Never quite found anything to confirm that. Or to clarify if "largest" refers to the height of the wall or the area covered inside the wall.)
Maybe it would draw more attention if I retitled the entry "Birthplace of the Republican Party - Jackson, Michigan, USA."

Two things are worth mentioning:
Geography is in Jackson's favor these days as it is directly between Chicago and Detroit on both the highway and the Amtrack rail lines.
Also, there are great street signs along the roads that say:"Prison Area: do not pick up hitch-hikers!"
Otherwise, VERY comprehensiive article on the little Michigan town that I have driven through almost 100 times, but knew almost nothing about. . .

Good ideas, Friar. I'll have to add something about that. I was thinking on a smaller scale when I described Jackson as being near Ann Arbor and Lansing, but readers unfamiliar with the state would recognize Detroit and Chicago more easily.
I think those "prison area" signs are posted near prisons all around the state, but that would be a good detail to mention.

I've seen the prison signs in other places too, but for some reason they always make me think of driving past Jackson.

I took out the notes about Jackson being near Ann Arbor and Lansing, changed that to "between Detroit and Chicago along the highway or Amtrak rail lines" and added this to the "Gone to the Tamaracks" section:
If you plan to do any actual hitchhiking through Jackson, try to get a ride before you get to town, and make sure it carries you through town and all the way out. Otherwise you may find yourself walking through stretches of Jackson. Signs on some of the major roads read "Prison Area: Do Not Pick Up Hitchhikers."

This is getting weird, I've seen 4 entries be selected IN A ROW, one conversation, congradulations, and then the next three are the same. I'm running out of
Well done, anyway
