A Conversation for CROSSING THE BOUNDARY - Proposal
What a Great Idea

What appeals to me about this idea is not that it opens up a corner of the world that was, and is, of intense importance in this age of shifting balances of power, but it also helps by fixing problems for the long term.
No where on Earth does there exist such a compelling difference of culture, wealth, language and ideology than in the diomedes. Compelling and compulsive this idea gets a from me.

Thanks for posting. Please keep them coming. This proposal has now grown into a commission for two (not four programmes). The first will be Nuclear Barges, the second is still to be agreed.
What I have learned, from a quick look round the net, is that there is a revival of interest in small and simpler units for generating electricity from nuclear power. This is not just the case in Russia but in lots of other countries as well. (see the last of the four urls in the Nuclear Power article A960545)
So for now what I’m really keen for is discussion on that article about small nuclear power units. Anybody out there know anything about this?

I have absolutley no idea about them, Richard, sorry. However, I think it's very aposite that there is a surge of interest in looking at how to better use nuclear power, especially in the light of recent speculation that the present administration in the US has laid down plans to re-vamp it's nuclear weapons programme. There's always a good an bad use for technology. I'll see if the Researcher who has previously written about neuclear reactors for h2g2 is still around and maybe get them to post.

What would you like to know about nuclear power plants? I've been out of the nuclear industry for about 2 years, so I might be a little rusty. On the other hand, everything I know about nuclear power is publicly available information, so it shouldn't be too hard to dig up some information.

Hello
I’ve just read the two articles A476723 How a Nuclear Plant Works
A685109 Project Plowshare - 'Peaceful Nuclear Explosions'
Both very interesting. Having driven across Siberia I am mostly in favour of nuclear power – Bilibino is certainly a much healthier and cleaner town than Pevek, where when I was there, the soot from the coal powered furnaces covered the white snow and filled the air with smog.
What I’d really appreciate to help with my research for the radio programme is any information and views about Russian KLT-40 reactor that was designed for icebreakers and which is being converted for use on the barge power platforms. The latest information I’ve found is in the Washington Times article http://www.washtimes.com/op-ed/20020904-62752612.htm dated September 4, 2002, which reports that they already have a factory producing barge-mounted nuclear power plants on those barges.
For the radio programme I would much prefer to visit one in situ rather than go to the factory. Best Richard
