is there anyway of just having a normal SELECT drop-down in GuideML without having HTTP links to other pages?

Not that I know of. I've lookled and looked and looked, and can't see any drop-down menus without http links unless you wanted to link to other parts of the site, in which case, you would use for an article or if you are referring to a researcher

Do you mean you want it to display a list of things without doing anything with them?
What would be the use then?

I think what is meant is to use a drop down menus that perhaps sends information, like preferences, in a form, or perhaps brings up a message box. For instance, if it asks "do you want to save this profile?", with options "yes" or "no" (in the drop down menu), if the user selects "yes" then a message box could appear saying "Are you sure you want to save?". Not the best example I know but I think it gets my point across...

This is allowed in GuideML, but isn't approved GuideML:
Option 1
Option 2
You can use most normal HTML in GuideML. Only a few tags like and are parsed out.
