As GuideML is derived from XML, all tags must be closed. This differs from HTML 4 (and earlier) which are based upon the SGML standard which is much cooler as it allows optimisations like leaving out tags.

Yes, I agree that there are typographical errors in A957387. In the section "Syntax and Usage" the lines have been mistakenly "closed" with rather than . However, the examples given lower in the article are correct.

Having just checked, <./>GuideML-UL</.> (A957503) does not have the same mistake as <./>GuideML-OL</.> (A957387).
