A Conversation for A Crash Course To Welsh
Old Welsh

Just a note you might like to follow up. Gildas, writing in the Dark Ages (exact century forgotten) writes in understandable Welsh using grammar similar to today. His vocabulary is similar to today's but has some 'strange' words or words used in an unfamiliar context.
In comparision, early English writing of a similar age is more akin to German. For example:
Ðeodric ahte Þritrig wintra Theodric ruled thirty winters
Mæringa burg Þæ wæs monegum cuÞ Maering city that was known by many
þæs ofereode Þisses swa mæg That went by this may too
(very small excerpt from 'Deor')
It is early 8th century and has some links with older forms of words (almost King James Bible-like). Can you understand it?
Afterthought - My father's family are Welsh and my very English five-year-old can count from 1 to 10 in Welsh!

I don't understand that at all, but some of it looks as if it would make sense if I knew just a bit more Welsh. (I have been asking Welsh friends to help me with my posting of A Crash Course To Welsh, and don't actually understand much myself. It all started when the BBC would not let me have a welsh nickname of mine; Pysgodyn a Sglodion (which means fish and chips); and I was hoping they would let me have it, if I put a Welsh article in.

Don't worry about the text, that is old English, not Welsh. You could always try 'ffysi an dtips' which is a Welsh spelling of fish and chips. (the English 'ch' is hard to do in Welsh).

Welsh for fish and chips is Pysgodyn a Sglodion not whatever you said it is, I know that much. How good are you at Welsh?

No, not Welsh for fish and chips, just 'fish and chips' spelt the Welsh way (it's pronounced 'fish and chips')
