We don't sell the mags - since they're official, they're sent out to parents. It's not cutting-edge writing, more a review of the year...

An age? Is that long? I've been here for about two weeks! Enjoying my brief stay so far, the house rules need a bit of a change though..

The House Rules are solid and will not change that much - they've worked for three years, and I've been here almost two...

What's your particular problem, besides the Welsh, with them?

The whole language thing! I mean, as someone pointed out to me earlier, this is supposed to be an international website. And DNA, who set this site intended it to be an international site, so i cant see y it cant b 1! anyway, i just get annoyed when people wont let you speak a language if you want to. It's like being in school and not being alowed to speak backslang or chew gum, you know the thing??

I personally think that uniting in a common language is a good thing - I'd have difficulty performing as a Volunteer if suddenly everyone started conversing in, say, German. French would be fine, Spanish passable, and I can see the arguments for Welsh although I don't understand it myself.

It seems to me that this is 2 potential entries in 1 - the first being a history of Welsh, and the second being a basic intro to the language.

It has been many years since I took a Welsh course (and almost as long since I spoke it), but I do remember that the single most important part of making me comfortable with it was the discovery that Welsh is basically phonetic, and that the emphasis come on the penultimate syllable of every word. Perhaps explaining this and including a link to an online pronunciation guide would be helpful (I like the online Welsh course at http://www.cs.brown.edu/fun/welsh/). Nowadays, though I would be rather lost at conversational Welsh, I can still pronounce any Welsh word I see, and that's a big deal to anyone coming fresh to a language.

You might want to address it as a gendered language (masculine and feminine) and containing both formal and informal forms of address (in chi and ti, similar to English you and thee), and that northern and southern Welsh can be quite different (I was at college with 2 girls who had to speak English with one another because their Welsh was so radically different).

I'm quite keen on having edited entries on Welsh, and it seems to me that this could turn into something very valuable.

How does all this work then? Is there some strange malarchy happening or is it as simple as copying and pasting? smiley - fish

To begin with, I think we should start from scratch with a new Entry, using your current Entry for inspiration. I'll start with the Entry, then you can copy the code once we've got a layout set up and have started work on the content, then as it progresses we can all pass the Entry around until we reach a final draft. Then I'll effectively pre-edit it and groom it for submission to Peer Review (which I should know how to do by now), and then we'll see how it goes.

I think that the history and some basic phrases belong together - one subject, one Entry. smiley - smiley

Yeah, I think that'd work. As long as you know the style we're looking for, and I know more or less whats gonna go in it it could work.
What do you think about adding a brief section of the Latin influence on Welsh and other European languages including English? I've written a small history so far, but I don't actually know whether to put it in as a section in that entry, or to make a new entry for it.

Phryne- 'Best Suppurating Actress'

hi WebWitch.
I would be interested in both articles, but a more thorough pronunciation guide would be good. For instance the difference between 'th' and 'dd', as well as the dialectal issues.

I was surprised when I first started at how easy it was to become accustomed to one of the, at a glance, most odd-looking languages there is. (At least, the one that probably gets the most jokes made about it.) Although I did go through a smiley - weird transitional thing where I was reading English words with Welsh pronunciation.
Maybe some discussion of sentence construction and word order?
