Entry: Getting Around in Canada in the Winter - A946820
Author: anhaga - U215480

Unless everybody really likes this, I'm only going to leave it in Peer Review for a day or two. Although absolutely factual, it is meant as a bit of a joke.

You know, I just looked at the edited entry on Canada, A53443, and I take it back: smiley - crossmy entry is officially not a joke anymore. It truly describes how we get around in Canada, there are no inaccuracies (unlike the above mentioned edited entry) and I think the description of getting around is in keeping with the spirit of entries in Douglas Adams' original Guide: pithy and stating what should be obvious to all but unaccountable isn't to most.

P.S. If you really think I should remove it, just say so.smiley - blush

Hi,

I'm actually a bit surprised that the Canada entry you reference got into the editted guide!

It happens to be -20C on the Bruce Peninsula this morning (and -29 in Ottawa). But I've never used a block heater or let my car idle longer than a minute before driving away. It would be a different story in Whitehorse or Yellowknife I'm sure. (I have used a dog sled, but not for everyday transport smiley - winkeye ) Are those the sort of misconceptions you are hinting at?

Yes, those are the misconceptions. Right now my truck is plugged in (in Edmonton) but I've gone through winters of -35C without bothering.

The Canada entry is one of the very early ones and is certainly not very good. It could do with a serious update. Volunteers? smiley - biggrin

Perhaps sometime I could find a way to do an update but I'm not really sure how I make it an update rather than just a new entry, I mean from the technical Guide point of view.

There's an update centre somewhere. when your article is ready, put it in Peer Review with a message stating clearly that this is an update of an existing article. Then, take it out after seven days of comment and submit it to the update centre where they will do the necessary.

You don't get the front page I'm afraid with updates but you can say that you've done something for your country!

I'll try and find the link to the update page. You could also leave a message on one of the italic's pages, saying that the Canada EG article is a travesty and you're 'updating' it.smiley - biggrin

You may already have found it but anyway: the h2g2 Update HQ is at A496451 and there are further details over there. Just BTW: there is a discussion about a New Update Scheme (A496451) but that's still a discussion, not a decision.

As to this entry... you caught me by surprise smiley - laugh. Anyway, it's a bit thin to become an Edited Entry, but have you seen <./>AggGag</.> or the AWW alias Writing-Alternative?

Okay, this has been in here for a few days. What does everyone think (especially Canadians)? Should it stay here longer or go to AggGag?

You're asking Canadians to reply with a simple YES or NO?
We couldn't phrase a referendum question that can be easily answered yes or no. Chretien hasn't given a straight yes/no answer all week.

But, if you ask me if it should go to AggGag - I'd reply with a very definite maybe.
