Prior to anything in the newspapers there was Fantasy football manager and American Football manager running as Play by Mail games. Some of these had so many players they ran to multiple leagues.
They were mainly stat based, but the better ones allowed a choice of tactics, passing and tackling style. So a long ball playing, tough tackling, defensive team could look for a lot of one-nil wins if they had a good keeper, and providing they didn't have a fussy ref. Teams with good ball players would utilise a short-passing, possesion, soft tackling, offsife game and wait for the ref to reduce the opposition.
The players would get a scripted match commentary with their player names in it and descriptions of the managers (you) reactions. Possibly even an interview if it was a good game.
