I came across this story in a collection of 'Embarassing moments' that a women's magazine had asked its readers to write in with.
A woman was at the checkout with her shopping, but one of the items didn't have a price on it. The checkout girl put out a price request over the intercom, but the man upstairs must have mis-heard 'Tampax' as 'thumb-tacks'. (Go figure, as they say!) A brisk, businesslike, male voice came back with, 'What kind does she have - the kind you push in with your thumb or the kind you pound in with a hammer?'
It takes a lot to bring tears to my eyes in that department, but that story makes me wince!
