I think that this is finished, but I'd like it to go into Peer Review at the same time as its 'sibling' (A958511) which does need some more work.
Comments very welcome.

Fascinating entry Mina
I had a schoolfriend who's mother often used the phrase 'As black as Newgit's knocker'... which meant very black indeed. I've never looked up the origin of that saying.
Was Newgate also known as Bedlam?
"...criminals. by 1720 and transportation, branding..."
Something not right there.
"...and the worst, it had room for..."
A full stop after 'worst'?
"The stench was unimaginable... ...forced to close in the summer because of the unbearable stench."
Too much stench? You could replace one of them with 'reek' or a similar word.

Thanks Gosho - I haven't heard that saying before.
Bedlam was the Bethlehem Royal Hopital for lunatics - something else I havemy eye on for a short entry. During my wanderings round old London, I've found that it stood in various different parts of London. Until I do more research I won't know for sure where it was, if it moved around, or if it branched out, like Tescos. There is a plaque near Liverpool Street station though.
I've sorted out those little problems, thanks.

I'm a Scout - it's my job
Bedlam. Ah, of course, it was the lunatic asylum - me.
I Googled the phrase and came up with a handful of references, including this one from a Jools Holland fan site

If I was given three wishes, one of them would be to be able to play piano like Jools can
Ooh look, topic drift already

I do have some more work to do on this after all. I found another source book that might have some info. Have you had a look at my Tyburn entry? It's a lot shorter than this one.

Haven't had a chance yet, and I've been called in to work tomorrow, but I'll take a look soon, and I'm sure that others will have done so too by then...
WON'T YOU!!!!

Oh well, it doesn't matter too much. I'll just sit here and eat worms...

That's probably best. I'll try to do some more work on both entries later. At least posting to them again brings them back to the top.
