There are lists of internet/text-message abbreviations on the internet. I prefer not to use them myself. NB That one's not very polite (though not intended as an insult). I could give you some links to sites with lists if you like.

The official(?) BBC lists are rubbish - with hardly any listed:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/communicate/help/chatrooms/help_jargonbuster_cr.shtml
There are more on external sites I previously found with a web-search.

yes please SEF please send me the links, as it seems people are talking in a private language. When I asked they were not very helpful just saying
it was made up & only gave me two meanings.
Please can I ask fellow researchers who come if you are going to use these expression please put their meaning because I do not then what you are talking. I do not want to keep on asking people what they are talking about. I do not this lanuage & it makes me feel excluded when its used. I know everyone else does and you proberly think I am just been awkward as the only we cannot understand it.

Well there are an awful lot of them. I've selected a few of the less offensive sites (I hope). There will be some overlap on the common ones but others are more specific to a particular group of people. The last link is to a very long list.

Thank you SEF for the links
The only problem by going into these links I have to back to email and then go to the h2g2 link.

I am not very happy with the answer I got to my query yesterday about /:o
yes I know its a ld smiley but what does it signify? If I knew the answer to tha t I would not be bothering to ask the question & I am not feingin ig I really do not know what it means. This place is supposed to be a place where are queries are answered fully. I suspect Kow you know what it means & you do not believe that I can't & I am just putting my ignorance on. Well I am going to keep on asking until I get a proper reply to my query.

JA: I don't appreciate been called ignorant when I've answered this question half a dozen times to the best of my ability. Once more...
Loup uses it, ask loup.

Kow I never said you were ignorant. If you read it again you will understand that I wa referring to myself. I was trying to explain that I was not pretending to know. Its just did not come out right. I am very sorry of accusing you of not answering to my query properly.
I do not like upsetting you or anyone here. I feel very insecure and paranoid at this moment. When I say I am very near to tears, I am not exgarrating.

/:o) is my personal smiley that i used on LD and also use on emails or anywhere where the h2g2 smileys don't work...
usually a smiling one like this one /:o)
a winking one would be /;o)
a angry/annoyed/upset one would be /:o(
as i said before it a personal version of the commun smileys [not h2g2 ones]
i was going to come back to this thread once i was back online and give this more detailed description...
done now...

Katrine...im not being funny..but arent you getting worked up about nothing a lot of the time? (which cant be very good for you with all the stress you already have at home etc)
i dont always get exactly what people are talking about, but if theyre not specifically talking to me at the time..i take no notice (all friends have little jokes just between them n stuff ..its never personal).if they are specifically talking to me however ,n i dont get something..ill ask.saves a lot of fussing about nothing that way..n hardly anything on here is ever a big deal.

i noticed that the link i posted earlier about GuideML has been useful... [and used]..
the Researchers involved in the project there are determined to make the explanations about using GuideML as users friendly as possible...
definitely good news there...
i will post the link again time to time so that those who visit this thread won't miss it..
talk soon everyone...

Sandra I am going through a very stressful patch now.
I do ask people what they mean but sometimes they do not answer me completely so it leaves me more frustrated than I was before. I really do try and not let things get me down and not to take things seriously as suppose that reflects my poor self esteem I have. I am going on a taster course next week and part of the course is improving self confidence & self imagery.
