"Once bitten, twice shy!"
That one's always fascinated me for some reason. I guess I've never really been bitten properly, because I'm not shy about it in the least, and wouldn't mind offering myself up for a few more nibbles.
But I guess it's supposed to be sorta the same thing as:
"Fool me once, shame on you; but fool me twice and shame on me!"
The idea being that painful lessons (either physical or emotional) can (or ought to be) learned the first time round.
Which is probably why fools rush in where angels fear to tread.

I never thought too much on "once bitten, twice shy" it was part of a song which was part of a genre that my mom wouldn't let me listen to
