Here is an entry on the Ukraine that I found in flea market. When I found it, it had about two paragraphs, and I thought it would be a shame to just waste it. I only know some about the Ukraine, so if you know something, please tell me and i'll add you to the researchers list!

OK I'll rack my brains about Lvov and Odessa for you as well.
BTW the coup against Gobachev led to him being kept under house arrest at his dacha near Odessa.
And a link to A832411 A Brief Introduction to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics would do well.

In the transport section you say it is a bad idea to cross the country by train. But the vastness and the relative poverty make this by in large to only option for the locals. It is one of the best ways to see the country and if you want to learn the language a long slow train ride in a carraige full of locals is bound to be a good way to pick up a fair wee bit.

Well hows this for Lvov/Lviv for starters.
Lviv/Lvov is the biggest city in Western Ukraine.
It was founded by Prince Danylo Halitski of Galicia, which was a pricipality of the Kievan Russians, as a fort in the 13th Century. He was a powerful Prince in East Central Europe. Lvov is mentioned in a Medival document dating from 1256. It is named after Danylo's brother Lev.
It location almost in the centre of Europe made it quickly an important centre for trade. It was a cross road for trade routes from the Black and Baltic Sea, to Moscow and the East and Warsaw, Vienna and Prague to the West. Due to its geographical location the city was a meeting place of Ukrainian, Polish, Jewish and Austrian cultures. Armenians, Hungarians, Greeks, Italians, Serbs, Moldavians and many more others lived there for the duration of many centuries. All of them together had introduced wide variety of traditions, cultures, religions and a mix of architecture.
Lviv is a major economic, indutrial and cultural center of the Western region of independent Ukrainian state.

I was thinking yesterday in a quiet moment abouyt Ukraininan sporting acheivements.
So there is Dynamo Kev who were the first USSR team to win a European football tournament the Cup Winners Cup.
Also they have many strong teams in tradition Soviet sprots ie Gynastistic, Athletics, Chess etc
However they also have Sergey Bubka the greatest polevaulter or owrld athlete of all times. First man to vault 6 meteres constantly breaking his own records in the 80s and 90s and winning more consequtive World Atletics titles than any other athlete.
Odessa
Demon Drawer Posted Dec 26, 2002
Odessa Ukraine is the 5th largest city in Ukraine. But as a major Black Sea port the most important city of trade. It was once the third leading city in old Russia, behind only Moscow and St. Petersburg. Due to Russia love pre-revolution for all things French and western European the city has more of the appearance of the Mediterranean, being heavily influenced by French and Italian styles.
History
Odessa is situated on terraced hills overlooking a small harbor. Nearly 1700 years ago, an ancient Greek colony settled nearby the city's current position. The name comes from an ancient Greek colony OdessosIt was the Empress Catherine II who wanted to use the name but in the feminine Odessa., which was located near present day Varna, Bulgaria. In the 14th Century, Crimean Tartars traded in the Odessa region. During the Russo-Turkish War, from 1787-1791, the Ukrainian Black Sea Kozaks conquered the Tartar settlement of Khadzhibei and the Turkish fortress of Eni-Dunai, near the city's present-day location, De Ribas, a frenchman, helped lead the conquest. Odessa was officially founded in 1794 as a Russian naval fortress on lands annexed from Turkey during the Treaty of Jassy in 1792
From 1803-1814, a Frenchman the Duke de Richelieu, was governor of Odessa. He had served in the Russian army during the Turkish war and is considered one of the founding fathers of modern-day Odessa.
During the Crimean War from 1853-1856, Odessa was bombarded by British and French naval forces. As trade grew, so did Odessa and she became the largest grain-exporting port for Russia. In 1866, the city was linked by rail with Kiev and Kharkov as well as Jassy, Romania.
In 1905, Odessa was the site of a workers' revolution, supported by the crew of the Russian battleship Potemkin and Lenin's Iskra. Following the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917 during World War I, Odessa was occupied by several groups, including the Central Powers, the French, the Reds and the Whites. Finally, in 1920, the Reds took control of Odessa and united her with the Ukrainian SSR, later becoming part of the USSR.
From 1921-1922, Odessites suffered from a great famine that occurred as a result of the War. During World War II from 1941-1944, Odessa was occupied by Romanian and German forces, and suffered severe casualties. Approximately 280,000 Odessites (mostly Jews) were either massacred or deported. Some 30,000 Odessites defended their city in honor from some 300,000 enemy troops. Odessa was liberated by the Soviet army in April of 1944. During the 1960's and 1970's the city grew tremendously. In 1991, the city became part of newly-independent Ukraine, after the collapse of Communism.
The city's industries include ship building, oil refining, chemicals, metal working and food processing. It is also the home of the main Ukrainian naval base and fishing fleets. During the Soviet era it was home to the Black Sea Fleet which was primed along with the Baltic and Artic fleets to launch atatcks on Western Europe.
Odessa has many therapeutic resorts, spa baths, mud baths and springs. As a result it is a major holiday location for Ukrainians to escape the extreme heat of high summer inland as they head for the coast and a cooling breeze.
