Excellent! Well researched and fascinating. I always wondered how they came about and what the boxes were. Thank you for an excellent look at an interesting subject.
One thing- I have never seen sausages in Japanese cooking- what are they called?
(with Asahi and sake!)

Not quite sure. There aren't many sites online with descriptions of Bento, and what I did find, they called it "sausage"...

[uinnasooseeji] Vienna sausage
[sooseeji] (n) sausage
[doraisooseeji] dried sausage
[choudzume] (n) sausage
All I could find.

Nice one Sat, s'kewl! I'm a bit of a Japanophile, and I like Japanese cuisine, so I enjoyed reading this - it seems very comprehensive and thorough.
You know can buy bentos from Tescos and Sainsburys these days. I'm not sure how authentic they are - almost certainly been anglicised to some extent, but I've not tried them. My mate says they're tasty, but as I have a Japanese restaurant 5 minutes from work that does a cheap lunch I have a better option!
You should get this on PR - belongs on the front page, does this.

"You know can buy bentos from Tescos and Sainsburys" - doesn't make sense
Should be "You know *you* can buy bentos..."
I shall now go and write out 100 times, "I must press preview before posting!"
