Amfoot Trivia Question 0066
FiedlersFizzle Started conversation Jan 28, 2003
Great Defenses.... we seen a few over the years. However, one defense achieved the following stats in one season...
Led league in all three categories of rush, pass and total defense... I think the only time this has happened, certainly since the adoption of a 16 game schedule in 1978.
Total Defense... 3549 yards, 221.8 per game... all time best for 16 game regular season
Run Defense... 1136 yards, 71.0 per game... 4th best all time for 16 game regular season
Pass Defense... 2413 yards, 150.8 per game... best for 16 game season since 1980
They allowed 244 points for the season which was only the 5th best for that year, but they did lead the league with 55 sacks, 39 coming from their starting defensive line...
Which team and in what year please?

Amfoot Trivia Question 0066
FiedlersFizzle Posted Jan 28, 2003
Yes the run stat is a little high and only the 4th best for a 16 game season, the Ravens hold the record by allowing only 970 (est) yards rushing in 2000 - only team to allow under 1000 yards rushing in 16 games...
So no, not the Ravens of 2000...

...are certainly a possibility.
I'm going for a long shot though. With thattype of dominating D-Line, could this possibly be the Gastineau inspired '84 NY Jets?
Amfoot Trivia Question 0066
Bright Blue Shorts Posted Jan 28, 2003
I missed that bit about the d-line and sacks.
If not any of the aforementioned, I'll go for Pittsburgh 95/96.
Amfoot Trivia Question 0066
FiedlersFizzle Posted Jan 28, 2003
No and no... it was neither of those teams...
I've read about the NY Sack Exchange but never got to see them play (haven't really seen any footage either!!)... Gastineau, Marty Lyons and Joe Klecko wasn't it. Apparently they were awesome...
As an aside, Joe Klecko's son, I forget his first name, is a graduating senior this year and eligible for the draft... by all accounts he's not the most physically gifted DT but a superb technician after years of coaching from his dad...
Just thought I'd ask, does anyone know the secret of excellent D-Line play? I do and it might not be what you think...
Amfoot Trivia Question 0066
Bright Blue Shorts Posted Jan 28, 2003
Secret of D-line play - low centre of gravity, get under the opponent. I remember Bob Golic used to reckon his experience in college wrestling helped him a lot.
49ers - '89/90.

The '86 Giants? Lawrence taylor got a lot of sacks, but the rest of the LB's on that squad didn't, as I recall...
Amfoot Trivia Question 0066
FiedlersFizzle Posted Jan 28, 2003
Not the 49'ers or Giants of 89 or 86 respectively... wanna clue?
Secret of D-Line play... if it's low centre of gravity how does the lanky, 6-6 Jason Taylor perform so well, and why the propensity of taller DT's entering the game? (Fisrt round picks John Henderson 6-7, Wendell Bryant 6-4 and Albert Haynesworth 6-6 don't really fit into the classic DT mould of short and stumpy...)

One last shot in the dark, though i'm pretty sure it's wrong, though if the team had a weakness it was the LB's
The 84 Seahawks...
Amfoot Trivia Question 0066
Bright Blue Shorts Posted Jan 28, 2003
Clue, not yet.
Eagles 91.
Low CoG can occur in people with short legs/long body so being 6'6" tall doesn't describe whether that is the case with Jason Taylor. Also keeping CoG low will allow the player to get under the offensive lineman and take him off-balance, tall players can still lower their CoG by bending their knees!
However the elements of deadline play are many so I assume it would have to be something that allows the lineman to know whether the offense are going to run or pass ...
Amfoot Trivia Question 0066
FiedlersFizzle Posted Jan 28, 2003
BBS!! You're correct!! The 91 Eagles it was.... Point and beverage to yourself then, and your Q.
Probably one of the best defenses ever but will never be recognised as such as they missed the playoffs that year... No effective RB (except Keith Byars catching passes) and Randall Cunningham getting injured for the rest of the season in the first game scuppered their chances... they still managed 10-6 with a beat up Jim McMahaon and Jeff Kemp starting, which is impressive, and that year they had to contend with quite an impressive NFC line-up...
Detroit - 12-4
Chicago - 11-5
New Orleans - 11-5
Atlanta - 10-6
San Francisco - 10-6
and in their own division...
Dallas - 11-5 with Emmitt leading the league in rushing, Irvin in yards receiving and the triplets having their breakout offensive juggernaught season.
Washington - 14-2 (one loss to the Eagles, the other Dallas) with an offensive juggernaught of their own - Rypien, Monk, Sanders, Clark (all over 1000 yards) Byner, Ervins, Riggs and of course, the Hogs... A couple of years ago I checked out which SB winning team played the toughest schedule based on win/loss percentage of opponents... it was the 91 'Skins... the Eagles would have played pretty much the same opponents... The year before, Cunningham had a great season (30 TD passes, 3000+ yards and 942 rushing yards), if he didn't get injured, well, who knows... perhaps RE1 could tell us about the frustration of that year..
So... The Eagles '91 Defense
DE - Reggie White (15 sacks)
DT - Jerome Brown (9 sacks)
DT - Mike Pitts
DE - Clyde Simmons (13 sacks)
OLB - William Thomas
MLB - Byron Evans
OLB - Seth Joyner (6.5 sacks/ 3 Ints)
CB - Eric Allen (5 Ints)
CB - Ben Smith/Izell Reese
SS - Andre Waters
FS - Wes Hopkins (5 Ints)
Pretty good in my opinion...
I'm on lunch now... I'll get back to the secret of good D-Line play mwhen I get back!!
Amfoot Trivia Question 0066
FiedlersFizzle Posted Jan 28, 2003
I attended a coaching conference a couple of years ago and one of the guest lecturers was Jim Tomsula, D-Line coach of the Scottish Claymores. He explained soemthing then that I have seen corroberated many times since in various coaching articles and also confirmed in the aformentioned article concerning Joe Klecko and his son... That is, the key to defensive line play is how you use your hands... sure there are the basics, size, strength, speed etc, but when you get to the level where all players physical attributes are similar (the comparitive difference between a practice squad defensive lineman and an NFL starter is tiny) how you use your hands is what separates the great from the also-rans...
Swim moves, club moves and the like are well known to most football fans, but Tomsula demonstrated an incredible plethora of hand techniques designed for pass rushing, gaining penetration or keeping the O-Lineman away from you whilst you diagnose the play. Remember those fights comedians were keen to use between two supposedly wimpy and cowardly characters... where they stand a way apart, heads turned away from each other with arms extended and hands flapping at each other? Well, if you look closely, to the untrained eye this can be what line battles look like... to the trained eye it's more of an intricate martial art... The OL wants to get into the DL's body and push him around, the DL uses his hands to maintain separation and so avoid being blocked, his aim is to get a hold of the OLman with his hands and control where he goes...
I dunno why I'm telling you all this but I found it fascinating and I certainly appreciate DL play a lot more now...
The secrets I could tell you about DB play as told to me by Jeff Rhienbold from the Rhien Fire/Amsterdam Admirals I think, are fascinating too, like how DB's can tell how many steps the QB drop will be before the QB completes his first step and so be able to discard a number of possible routes his man could run...
It certainly is a scientific game...

So no truth to my theory that being built like Gilbert 'Sumo' Brown is the key then...
As for the db's, I can tell they've never seen my patented 6 1/2 step drop in Madden 2K3...
