Amfoot Trivia Question 0190

Wildman - I'm not really mad, I've just been in a very bad mood for 40 years!

Blathers last question involving good names in football got me thinking of a player who's college career involved Texas, TCU, Cameron Junior College and University of Oklahoma - where he was kicked off the team for slugging a student assistant coach!

I'll get to his Pro career tomorrow if nobody recognises him before then.

I thought the College career might be a bit obscure but it does set the scene smiley - laugh.

His Pro. career started as a first-round pick for the Giants (where he lasted 28 days), then the Colts, Lions, Redskins, the Army and the Saints - all within 6 years.

If this doesn't help, then tomorrow you get some of the stories smiley - biggrin.

Blathers comment makes me think 'Mike Rump'h,
I'm not really au fait with N.O.,butt I suppose Wes Bender has to be a candidate purely on the name!!
Warm?

Wildman - I'm not really mad, I've just been in a very bad mood for 40 years!

No, the sexual innuendo is the wrong way to go smiley - winkeye!

I keep forgetting how young you all are - it seems I've done it again, and just because I know about this player I shouldn't take it for granted that you whippersnappers will ever have heard of him. smiley - laugh

So what you're looking for is an appropriate name for some-one who, after being drafted No 1 by the Giants -
Refused to throw his used socks and jock into a bin so marked, because "no damned sign is going to tell me what to do!"
Refused to talk to reporters, because "they just get things f***ed up."
When a note was pushed under his door, he pushed it back out and shouted "And don't you bother me none either."
Was bored by practise and preferred playing catch with a nine-year-old boy on the sidelines.
In scrimmages he ran the seven-hole when he was supposed to run the five-hole. "Anyone can run where the holes are, a good football player makes his own holes."

Is it any wonder that he only lasted 4 weeks before being traded to the (Baltimore) Colts?

From the 'clues' given so far, I reckoned this guy must have been playing in about 1960.

TBH I haven't got a clue and given that he played for 6 teams in 6 years, I doubt I'll even have heard of him.

That said one name that spring to mind as having played for both the Giants and Skins is Sam Huff, the linebacker. But he's a HoFer, so I doubt he skipped between teams much.

Very close, actually 1963 when he signed for the Giantssmiley - winkeye.

And definitely NOT in the HoFsmiley - laugh - although he might have been if not for his 'attitude'. A 58yd TD run for the Colts against the Bears, a TD in his first game for the 'skins etc - the guy could really play (I suppose that was why teams took a gamble on signing himsmiley - biggrin).

Unless FF (or GG or whatever) drags the name out of the depths of his memory, it may be necessary to guess what you'd call a player like that.
With a hint like that it hopefully might not be too hardsmiley - evilgrin

Damn. 1963 ... Frank Gifford was at the end of his career, I think. Y. A. Tittle was funny-named player (I think I asked a question about him a long time ago), but he's in the HOF. After that, I'm at a complete loss.

I'd call a player like that a "gamble" but ... well, was it someone named Gimble / Gamble / Gambole or variation of that?
smiley - erm If that's too many guesses, feel free to ignore it - I'm at a complete loss, as I said.

I'll pass as well, not to be derogotary to our 'older' forum memebers,
but this is passing to the realms of ancient history.
If he's passed through more teams than ExLax through a cat,I'm not going to have a clue.

Wildman - I'm not really mad, I've just been in a very bad mood for 40 years!

It seems a shame that a true flake and oddball like this seems to have disappeared from the history of the game. It might be trivia but it livens up the stories of the 'good old days'. It's perhaps a shame that he wasn't around for the Raiders in the days of Madden, I think he might have felt at home with the likes of 'Kick 'em in the head' Ted Hendricks and John 'Vodka and Valium, the breakfast of champions' Matuszak. (Never mind Matt Millen and Lyle Alzado smiley - laugh).

And if anyone wants to go into ancient history there a few good stories about Johnny Blood, Bronko Nagurski and contemporaries smiley - winkeye.

Wildman - I'm not really mad, I've just been in a very bad mood for 40 years!

It seems that no-one wants to play!

It looks like I'll have to ditch this question and try an easier one if I want out of the setter's job smiley - sadface.

So the new question is - Which team drafted Brett Favre? - straightforward or what?

Oh we all know that Atlanta drafted Favre in 1991, something like the 5th pick of the 2nd round. It was the "Channel Five" prize question earlier in the season ...

Give us another, I'm too embarassed to take the point for that one ...
