The reason for the lack of physical size is apparently so the players can float above the surface of the pitch for extended periods of time. This ability is related to a strong need for these players to be airborne. This is reflected in the nomenclature associated with some of the AFL teams. i.e: Eagles, Crows, Magpies, Swans etc.
