Worm on New Computer

I recently bought a new laptop (running XP Home Edition) and made the stupid mistake of connecting to the internet before I had all my security in place, virus protection, firewall, spyware etc. As a result I seem to have picked up a the NasiB Worm that is residing in my System Information\_restore directory.
My antivirus software (AVG) detects it and tells me I should run the program but when run it does not eliminate it.
Do I have to go through the laborious task of a complete system restore off the manufacturer’s disks or is there a way to eliminate this problem.
Any help would be most welcome! and also what is this little b@#*&^'s potential for damage
