This week's title is Fortuitous Discoveries. Clockwise from upper left: A sheep enjoying the view from atop a pile of hay, white hollyhocks in the sun, two sparrows in a tree, sun and clouds mirrored in water in the Netherlands, a collection of snapshots of yellow and red lilies, a montage of lenticular clouds, the rustic roof of a birdhouse, a squirrel posing in the crotch of a tree, and some lavender oleander.

It's summer in the northern hemisphere. (Willem is cold at night, but still chasing natural beauty down there.) The civilisations of the planet are churning with political strife and war. Our Researchers can't do anything about that (other than vote), just as they can't control the temperature or stop the hurricane that is now throwing rain around. So they concentrate on what they can catalogue – which is mostly nature doing its thing in spite of us.

Take a break from the madness. Enjoy the flower show. Chuckle at the found humour. Watch FWR build a gravity-defying birdhouse. Thrill to the chase as Paigetheoracle turns bird photographer and sneaks up on some sparrows.

A squirrel poses for Angel LiaDan. A sheep greets SashaQ from atop a haystack. Stop and admire these glimpses. Think of what this planet could be if we'd only let it.
