A Conversation for Deep Thought: Tougher Than...?

There are some people who should not call themselves Christians

I've occasionally met Roman Catholic priests who made no secret of their belief that the Protestants will someday return to Mother Church. They may be in for a long wait, but Protestantism has a central problem: it can be subverted, and there will be no one with the clout to rein it in again. The Catholics have a Pope and a central authority at the Vatican. This is not to say that Catholicism doesn't also have a central problem. Just look at the sad experience that many young people had with pedophile priests. Still, Catholicism is very concerned about maintaining its brand. I've heard about priests who began musing about how wonderful Buddhism is. They were defrocked.

I still identify as basically Christian despite not going to church unless it is my father doing the talking (he is a twice retired Protestant pastor).
Coming from an originally very strict Protestant family but living in the largely Catholic South of the country has given me some insights into how things are approached.
Since the strict ones adhere to a one strike out policy (one sin means eternal damnation without reprieve (although lavish donations are welcome)) which seems rather pointless to me. If I remember correctly, it was Jesus who gave some mighty sinners a second chance. Forgiveness should be a big thing, in my opinion.

We do have movements around here where previously separate brands of Protestantism merge back together again and even work together with the Catholics on a regular basis, finding common ground instead of focusing on the differences.
