To many! The "shilling" was called a Bob!
IE: 2 bob was 2 shillings 
and years ago household gas meters, you "put" a bob in to get the gas supply for "X" amount of hours

I remember staying in a hostel in London in the 70s that had those meters for heating. 
Something new to me coming from Germany.
