But not Lancaster bombers, as far as I know.

It's NOT the planes that were the hero's, it's the the crews that flew in them smiley - smiley

THAT also covers all the crews on all sides = respect! to those people..

(no disrespect to anyone of course)

True, but seeing Spitfires etc still flying is a visual reminder of the pilots and crew, and ensures they're not forgotten.

And also respect to the "enthusiasts etc" who spend their lives as such, in bringing those planes backsmiley - magic

Years ago, I once saw a Spit, Hurricane and Lancaster bomber do a flyover in Whitby smiley - magic(East coast of Yorkshire smiley - winkeyesmiley - biggrin) to those who don't know where Whitby is ? (smirks)

THAT brought tears to my eyes - the "drone" of the Lanc's engines, I could feel the power vibrating through my bodysmiley - smileyWHAT a feeling!!!

Over the years I've always enjoyed climbing around inside B-17s. Also in being grateful that I never had to ride in one for real. smiley - laugh

I saw the Lancaster flying over Southsea years ago for a 50th anniversary of D-Day commemorative flight, that's a sight I'll never forget. I also hope to see a Lancaster fly later this month (and hopefully I'll be able to take photos). The most Spitfires I've see flying together is 13 plus a Hurricane, but a few years ago I was cycling by Southampton Airport when nine took off one-after-the-other right by me unexpected - I didn't have a camera with me at all.

Apparently they try to have a big gathering of spitfires at Southampton Airport every 5 years as it was there, when it was Eastleigh aerodrome, that the Spitfire first flew in 1936. smiley - mod
