Periwinkles

Periwinkle flowers.

Enjoy your moment in the sun, periwinkles.

Soon, others will rise from the depths to claim the stage:

Spears of purple sage,

Their heads waving in the breeze,

Hungry bees hanging on for the ride.

Blue flag irises will defy the odds.

Don't they belong in a swamp? They don't think so!

Then, when these have set their seeds,

Milkweed and blackeyed Susans

Will mix yellow, black, and salmon pink.

In the Fall, the sage will bloom again,

Before the leaves fall and drop a soft blanket

Over them against the Winter's cold.

So, enjoy your moment in the sun, periwinkles!
