Sometimes cartoonists are heroes!

I didn't know that Nast hated the Irish, but in the case of this particular Irishman he had some good reasons. And he was a talented enough cartoonist to make a likeness that people would recognize. smiley - ok Maybe this is why Santa Claus visits but once a year, and by dark of night. smiley - winkeye

Caiman raptor elk - Inside big box, thinking.

That's a good story to tell your grandchildren. (Don't have any of those yet)
I always liked the cartoons in my history books.

Boss Tweed wasn't Irish. We should state this clearly in the interests of not spreading even more misinformation than the comments section usually does. smiley - laugh

Tweed and the other Tammany Hall politicians used a patronage system to exploit the potential of immigrant voters in New York City. The immigrant voters in question at the time were mostly Irish (men, of course: women couldn't vote). They had concerns - jobs, places to live, protection from 'Nativist' groups, etc. The politicians met those needs while lining their own pockets with kickbacks and bribes.

Tweed's ancestors came from Scotland and were Quakers.

And I agree with Caiman - it's a good story to tell the grandchildren. Cartoons have their uses. Herbert Block has done the world no favours by placing his with the Library of Congress but off-limits to reproduction. If those were someday to become public domain, they'd be a good teaching tool - but by the time they do I suspect no one will care about those periods anymore.
