No double deckers ? That must make sitting upstairs rather uncomfortable
Post war the Conservative government embarked on a period of car worship in that they decided to destroy as much transport infrastructure that wasn't a car as they could, closing trams, railways and even local airports. Funnily enough the Minister of Transport was Ernest Marples, who owned the Marples Ridgeway road construction company, and had a habit of closing railways and then giving himself the contract to build motorways where the railway had been. Of course as soon as railways & trams closed, road death rates shot up. Marples later fled the country as he couldn't be bothered to pay tax on his fortune stolen from the tax payer.
Now of course it is realised how terrible an idea promoting car use is and the government has set a target to ensure that 50% of journeys are completed by walking or cycling by 2030. (The second cycling and walking investment strategy - aka CWIS2)

In urban areas with public transport and small shops everywhere, you might be able to manage largely without cars, but in the boondocks I don't see the 50% level happening.

Excellent write up - thank you Love the buses driving along in the Entry
It is a shame how much potentially useful infrastructure has gone My dad used to go by bus to work, but switched to car in the 1970s because of so many problems...
Interesting about Bluestar and the Universal Serial Bus Bus
Glad you got to go on a good variety of buses, even though you didn't get to go on all three routes

The Leyland buses do have sad faces...
Interesting read.
We only have double decker trains and coaches here. On the trains I avoid the upper deck because there is a bend in the windows at my eye height, deforming the view.
Key: Complain about this post
