Wham-O came out with the hula hoop in 1958, and still makes them. I thought that they had copyrighted the name, but apparently snack-makers have found a way to also use it...

Interesting about Wham-O - thanks paulh smiley - ok Looks like they didn't trademark the phrase 'hula hoop' in their patent, hence it was used for potato snacks from 1973!

Given the connection between Hawaii and pineapple, I would imagine that hula hoops could be pineapple rings.
