Was Spot an ancestor of Spot the Wonder Dog? Both were named Spot, and both were fictional. I would not mind it if woodchucks overslept and failed to mow down the Spring flowers, but of course that will not happen.

I haven't seen any groundhogs yet. You're right about the dog, though - it's their job to chase groundhogs.
Hoggetts had one dog that would kill groundhogs, then let them get really ripe before chowing down and also rolling in the carcass.
Farmer Hoggett would bury them. Dog would dig them back up. Cue Farmer Hoggett fussing.

I'm ready to sprinkle garlic and chili powder on my plants to deter the groundhogs

It would also deter the bees, but by the time the plants are big enough to bloom, they're mostly too tough for the groundhog to enjoy. Most of my plants are disliked by groundhogs. My late neighbor said that they could eat his hostas to their hearts' content. I saw one merrily munching away a few years ago. I don't blame the groundhogs for eating my Echinacea, as it has healing qualities.

The deer eat our hosta if we don't spray, so we spray.
We saw the prettiest skunk out there two nights ago - perfect white stripes, too.
