A Conversation for Rudyard Kipling on Flag-Waving

I hope a nice discussion starts because of this

Although I love "Star-spangled banner" and its backstory, there is something to be said for not worshipping an object. A flag is an object. I'm afraid to buy any flags for fear of disposing of them improperly.

Kipling was a good New Englander. It was Vermont where he wrote The Jungle Books, Captains Courageous and the Just So Stories. He wanted to stay longer, but there was an incident. He loved Vermont.

The Roman aquila (Eagle) was not supposed to ever be lost. Loss was extremely grave. Did soldiers die unnecessarily for getting the aquila back?

What should we think of flags?
