I've heard that gulls are coming inland for food because there aren't enough fish.
The pictures convey the grace of the birds in flight, but not their size. They are big enough to be scary if they come down to pinch your sandwiches!

I think they are more omnivorous than some people think. Otherwise they would not eat bread products.

Yes, very true that the photo doesn't convey their size - I could tell they were very big birds as they dwarfed the black-headed gulls that were flying around as well. Scary indeed when they approach!
These ones were swooping around over marshland, so possibly they were finding crustaceans or even rodents to eat.
