Some books are good for making the reader understand other people's lives and viewpoints.
I particularly liked Andrea Levy's novel 'Small Island', which features a black couple from Jamaica who arrive in London just after the war, and the white woman who puts them up in her house.
And I've just read and been impressed by 'Half of a Yellow Sun' by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi. This starts with a group of educated Nigerians, who seem to enjoy a comfortable life. Then there are two coups and the country stumbles into the horror of the Biafran war. It made me aware how fragile one's comfortable life can be.
