Last Fall I heard a lot of geese honking as they flew overhead.

You would think they might need to communicate information.
Things like 'It's left at the next lake' and 'We need to be there by sunset.'
But it's probably just following the leaders who have done the trip before and have it stored in their memory.

Yes, I enjoy the sound of a skein of geese flying overhead 
. I can imagine their conversations are quite varied - checking who is in the formation, giving instructions, etc, yes
