Society is never static. Old people are dying off, new people are being born, and the lessons learned don't necessarily transfer form young to old. The investment Act of 1940 was diluted in the 1980s, just in time . for people to get sucked into Bernie Madoff's pyramid scheme.

moving forward is tricky. Affordable health care may or may not still be around thirty years from now, but here are some things from previous eras that did survive: Social Security, women's suffrage, public sanitation, inoculations, medication for hypertension and/or depression, and (for now) abortion.

I'm going to say that we do move three steps forward for every two steps backward, but they are not infrequently baby steps.
