This is an interesting story but it raises an important question. How far can you change the type of person you are?
If you are a shy, retiring type you can't get up in the morning and be outgoing and confident. Yet you do change over the years. You learn from the mistakes you made and from the successes you have.
Some people who have a hard time may become bitter and angry. If Harpo didn't respond like that, it may have been because his family, though poor, were loving.

You might really enjoy reading his book for a partial answer to that question. There were five brothers, and they were all very different in temperament, tastes, and responses to challenges. It's clear that being part of a loving family helped all of them, but in different ways.
I think the question is less one of 'how do I change my nature?' than 'how do I work with my nature to be less counterproductive?' Maybe that's just me.

There are tons of amusing anecdotes about Harpo. I love every one of them.
I've heard of the book but can't be sure if I actually read it. The Golden Age of Hollywood was enriched by the ex-vaudevillians who decided to be immortalized by performing in front of movie cameras. We would not have an inkling of what the Marx brothers were capable of had they not made movies. Some of them even went on television.
And nowadays you can enjoy much of their work online via Youtube nd other sites.
Life is good!
