For more than thirty years I toyed with the idea of going to New York to see this musical, but kept settling for regional productions, of which I saw four. I never grew tired of it. I first heard the original cast album in 1966, so I have a long history with the show. I even learned to play the overture on the piano (not well, but better than most of the other things I've learned to play).
I wanted to like the Hallmark production that you linked to, but the very first song put me off. Ricardo Montalban, when they probably could have had Jerry Orbach? Okay, I'm too fussy. Sorry.
The most obvious parallel is with "Our Town." There must be an overriding school of thought that led to minimalism in stage sets between the 1930s and the early 1960s, but I should just be glad that two such great plays were written, and just enjoy them.
