Researching this led me to the frustration of trying to find a neutral source on the Mormon Wars. Not possible, I'm afraid - though I did find a tell-all book by Brigham Young's 19th wife...

The Mormons were not regarded too fondly in "Riders of the purple sage" (by Zane Grey) either. But what could anyone do? The Mormons moved to Utah, which no one else particularly wanted to live in, and kept to themselves. They have good life expectancy, are self-sufficient, and inspired a witty musical.
But maybe the Indians and Catholics were also not loved in Brookville?

I will have more about the Indians and Catholics later. Basically, relations were peaceful.
As to the Mormons, things got really serious. Have you ever heard of the Mountain Meadows massacre?

Wonder what is more dangerous, armed Mormons or armed morons? (if there is any difference whatsoever)

Anybody convinced that their being 'right' justifies violence of any kind is a hazard to shipping, in my opinion.
Later on in the book, we will meet some people with strange notions of their own who are their own worst enemies. You can guess what state they come from....
There's a reason for the Pennsylvania schoolkid joke, 'The population of New York is very dense.'
