I've passed this most days for the last forty odd years, only found out today what it is!

Built in 1933 it's one of a pair of lights that marked the entrance and exit of the original road at the Mersey tunnel. The Liverpool monument sadly no longer exists.

Just been told that monument light was moved about 8 years ago. The thing went missing when they redid the approach road and was found years later in a builders yard. Who can store an eighty-foot black marble column without wondering where it came from?
