That is one humongous tree in the background. It's also dead ahead i you keep going straight on the sidewalk. So, closing the sidewalk may have saved clueless people from bonking their heads on that tree.
Or not. Even clueless people seem to be able, generally, to not walk into things they shouldn't walk into.
