I lived a small lake in Florida in the 1950s. I caught an "alligator" and took it to school on the school bus.

It was actually a Caiman, which is a small South American Crocodile that only grows to a size of about 40 kilograms...fortunately...

The easiest way to distinguish a Croc from a Gator is by looking at the snout shape.

Croc snouts are narrow compared with broad gator snouts.

We have salt-water crocodiles in the Everglades...I've seen a few big ones...

It amazes me that both crocodiles and alligators live in Florida. This seems to be the only place where they do. smiley - wow

I think I mentioned that I caught South American Crocodile (Caiman) in 1959 in a lake behind my house near Tampa, Florida. It was only about 3 feet long.

It was "taken" on a cane pole and bobber, using a very large frog for bait.

I took it to school and my biology teacher identified it. They don't get that big but they are reputed to be mean...I'm not sure the following is accurate about their Florida domain.

"The Common caiman is an exotic species in Florida, although it has become established in the southeastern part of the state. Caimans are native to Central and South America, and their distribution in Florida will probably remain confined to south Florida because they cannot tolerate cold temperatures."

The population of them seemed to grow and shrink. They caiman went.
