"The Moonstone" is considered the first detective novel. Every mistake to be found therein will be corrected by those who come after. Almost everyone will find ways of doing it better. Who's going to want to go back and try a Model T or Model A once they've tried something more refined?
Nowadays we have sleuths who bake deadly pastries, sleuths who are ghosts, sleuths who are lawyers in Lincoln town cars, sleuths who are dogs or cats, ad nauseam. There are satiric detective movies like "Murder by death."
So,I would feel some sympathy for Mr. Collins.....
