Thank you for writing this - the words conjure vivid poetic imagery in my mind...
"He went on with the business of pretending to be a teenager... But the spacetime was always there to be recalled, and a walk among tall trees would do it every time."
'Youth Camps' are character building in more ways than one... I enjoyed some aspects (such as being in nature and being able to help other people learn how to tie knots and make 'gadgets' out of wood), but some aspects were difficult (eg not being able to move very far independently). I managed quite a few, but I decided I had done sufficient character building after a week spent up to my axles in mud one summer when it rained every day...

Yeah, that sounds like a little too much 'character building' to me.
Camping was not something my family did a lot of, because if we wanted to get out into the country and be primitive, we just visited our relatives. Not all of them had running water or lived on a paved road.
