The possum is a state symbol in North Carolina. There's an odd law, passed in 2015, that allows a possum free-for-all between Dec. 29 and Jan. 2. A petition is going around to repeal that law.

Moses doesn't need an excuse to get into a sermon. He's always there, lurking.
All of those things are things I have actually heard uttered. Not all at the same time. 
The 'Gunga Din' speech was by a preacher in the early 1970s, and one of those illustrations was from three weeks ago.
Oh, you mean the possum drop? I know, that's ridiculous. I thought they were going to make them use a stuffed possum in future. Phooey.
Raleigh, NC, has a better New Year's custom. Somebody gave them a brass statue of a giant acorn. The person in question was rich and crazy, and they couldn't say no for some reason.
So they rigged it to go up and down, and at New Year's, they drop it like the Times Square ball.
