The expression "That ain't hay" came to mind. I guessed that the outlines of bricks could be seen, though they might have been made of sun-dried mud. Obviously the roof has a lot of hay, maybe too much. 
I always imagined sod houses to conform to a different method of building. I should have realized that there might be different way to use sod in building. (I was influenced by the accounts of this in the Laura Ingalls Wilder books, as well as "Lonesome Dove."
