These are striking pictures.

It's easy to think of Russia as cold and grey at this time of year, but that's obviously wrong.

Saint Petersburg is more often cold and *white*.

I expected/hoped to find Dmitri's keyboard version of Mozart's beloved serenade here. I am disappointed.

I may have to take out my keyboard and play it myself.

Fireworks can't help but lift my spirits. I don't know if they do this intentionally, or whether they are but an avatar being programmed by an oracle.

I'd rather drink my spirits than having them airlifted by rockets, but hey, I know what you mean.

There are days when I would settle for any little bit of help. I had to take so much medicine in my youth, I associated alcohol with being sick. The smell of alcohol when the nurse puts it on my arm for a blood test still makes me queasy.

It's the blood test itself that does that for me.

Well, yes, blood tests are no picnic either.

I tend to pass out. It helps that I know, so I can start off lying down instead of dropping involuntarily.

I usually tense up and hold my breath a bit. Nothing extreme, but probably it doesn't make things any better for me.
